Expect disruptions as Delhi airport repairs runway

Passengers flying through the Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport should expect flight disruptions as the airport’s center and most heavily used runway 10/28 will undergo preventive repair work for seven days starting on 5 April.

During the repair period changes in flight schedule and delays are expected to occur. The airport’s other two runways 09/27 and 11/29 will remain fully operational. While the typical lifetime of a runway according to ICAO guidelines is 20 years, runway repairs and preventive maintenance for early distress and pavement cracks are done every 5-6 years. IGI has chosen to finish the entire runway in one stroke, instead of the section by section approach taken by most airports in India that do not have multiple runways.

The airport currently receives around 1000 flights a day, at the rate of 68 flights per hour. During the week-long repair period, this capacity will fall to 60 flights per hour. This could possibly see a cut of around 200 flights a day.
