Airbus A320neo to make it’s maiden flight on Thursday

The Airbus A320neo is set to make it’s first flight this Thursday (September 25), European airframer Airbus announced Monday.

The maiden flight of the A320neo test aircraft is scheduled for 1030 local time in Toulouse, France (1400 IST), but will of course be subject to weather conditions.

The test aircraft which bears the registration F-WNEO is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Pure Power PW1127G high-bypass geared turbofan engines. These engines will also power the A320neo order of Indian carrier Indigo.

The “neo” or “new engine option” is an update of the popular Airbus A320. The neo will feature aerodynamic improvements, an updated cabin interior and increased fuel efficiency.

Airbus has received more than 3,000 firm orders for the A320neo, which officially was launched in 2010. The decision of Airbus to modernize the A320 is thought to have been a major factor in Boeing’s development of the 737MAX, which was launched in 2011.

Airbus planes to deliver the first A320neo sometime next year.
