Aeromexico flight 576 from Cancun hijacked to Mexico City

An Aeromexico Boeing 737 performing flight 576 from the Mexican resort of Cancun has been hijacked and flown to Mexico City, as per news media quoting Mexican officials say.

Transport Minister Juan Molinar told Mexican radio the jet had landed safely at Mexico City’s international airport.

Local media reported seeing passengers leaving the plane and boarding buses but the numbers of passengers disembarking are unknown.

The local media also reported that the three hijackers are Bolivians and have threatened to blow the plane up unless they were allowed to speak to Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

The incident began at 13:40 (19:40Z). TV Azteca reports, President Calderon was in the presidential hangar in the airport preparing to depart when the incident began, leading him to cancel his planned flight.
