A lady First Officer in an Arab airline. Congratulations Qatar Airways.

I received a press release from Qatar Airways about the pro-active and precautionary steps they are taking to protect their crews in the wake of the H1N1 Influenza A pandemic, better known as “Swine Flu”.

Along with the release I received this picture, and it floored me.

Generally, and I mean by and large, the middle east is not known for the rights and equality of the fairer gender. In some countries women do not even have the right to drive a car, forget flying an airplane.

A lady as a First Officer in a middle east airline?!?! Most commendable of Qatar Airways, which serves to highlight the progressive thinking not only of the organisation, but of the country as well.

Congratulations Qatar Airways, and congratulations to the lady. Hope to see four gold stripes on that epaulette very soon.
